Molesworth Station

April 15 @ 8:00 am - April 18 @ 5:00 pm

(15th – 18th April 2019)

Day 1. Wanganui – Picton

If departing from Wanganui meet at the Wanganui Racecourse for an 8am departure, and travel south to Levin for some lovely morning tea. We then head into Wellington CBD and drop off at Te Papa museum around 11.15am. Here you have time visit Te Papa, stroll along the waterfront or head into town to grab yourself some lunch. The coach will head out to Wellington airport to collect the flying travelers, returning to Te Papa just after 1pm.

If departing from Auckland or anywhere else, your shuttle will collect you at the designated time and transfer you to the airport in plenty of time to catch your flight to Wellington. The tour leader and coach will meet you at Wellington airport and you will meet your fellow travelers. (All tickets and details will be provided in your personal information pack sent two weeks prior to travel).

As a group, we then head to the Interislander Ferry terminal to catch our 2.45pm sailing over to Picton. When we arrive, it is just a very short drive to our accommodation, the ASURE JASMINE COURT MOTEL. Tonight’s dinner is at the lovely Barn Restaurant.

Day 2. Picton – Hanmer Springs

After breakfast, we are picked up from our accommodation by a true legend of Molesworth – Mr Rick Stirling! A man that’s been through the station on horse back and escorted travellers through this incredible part of the country for well over 30 years. His commentary is unbeatable with lunches, morning and afternoon tea provided. The days exploring concludes in Hanmer Springs where we will have a good old proper kiwi meal at Flynns – A pub owned by All Black Cory Flynn.

There will also be an opportunity for a soak in the beautiful hot springs if you wish.

Day 3. Hanmer Springs – Picton

After breakfast, Rick returns and treats to another day of spectacular scenery taking in the 500,000 acres of the almighty Molesworth Station. We visit the likes of Rainbow Station and the picturesque Wairau valley before making our way back to Picton. A quiet brew in the infamous Irish pub with Rick and a special meal all together will conclude an unforgettable experience through this famous region of New Zealand.

Day 4. Picton – Home

A relaxed start to the morning with time to browse around Picton before catching our ferry crossing back north. When arriving into Wellington those flying out will be transported to the airport and the others will make their way back to Wanganui arriving late afternoon.

Molesworth Station is NZ’s largest farm and covers over 180.476 hectares (approx.500, 000 acres or 700 sq.miles) and runs from 600m to 1800m. It is a unique and important resource and has a range of production, conservation and recreation values and uses, and because of this, Molesworth has retained its status as crown land. The rehabilitation of the land over the last 50 years, from 4 desolate farms – laid to virtual waste by a combination of fire, grazing and rabbits – represents one of the NZ major conservation and farming achievements.

This high country farm tour enables us to share the magnificent scenery and the wide open spaces of the true outback, the genuine New Zealand. No visitor to the alpine village of Hanmer Springs can be unaware of the mountains, you are surrounded by them – from the tree clad slopes of the Hanmer range to the high open tussock basins of Molesworth and Tarndale, from North West rain forests to the glaciated valleys and the Spencer Mountains, all dissected by swift rivers and backed by the snow covered Southern Alps.

Nestled under the inland Kaikouras is the Homestead complex with its century old cob buildings and planted trees. With the magnificent snow-capped “Tapuaenuku” an epitaph of Maori legend, towering in the background, it is truly a land alive with romantic ghosts of stockmen and shepherds, dogs and drovers, slouch hats and sweating saddles.

Our guide, Rick Stirling, has had over 30 years’ experience in the Molesworth high country and has an intimate knowledge of the district, its people and also a true love of the area. His informed commentary ensures no-one leaves the area without a true appreciation of the “real” New Zealand.

We suggest you bring a warm jacket – temperatures are subject to sudden change! Sneakers (or sensible shoes), sun-hat, sunglasses and a smile!!
