Day 1. (Sat 25th) Wanganui – Waipuna
Depart Wanganui Racecourse at 8am and travel north through to the National Park for morning tea. Continue along SH4 through Taumarunui to Te Kuiti where we stop for a lovely lunch. We then carry on our journey north and have a light afternoon tea beside the Waikato River arriving at our wonderful accommodation, Waipuna Hotel around 5pm. We will all meet for our first group dinner and get to know our fellow travelers.
*if you are starting your tour from another destination you will be flown or shuttled to Auckland to meet the group before dinner.

Day 2. (Sun 26th) Waipuna – Hokianga
Depart at 8.30am and leave the hassle of the big smoke behind us as we head into northland. This morning we deviate off SH1 and head out towards Matakana to Auckland’s latest world class experience, Sculptureum. This sculpture park is a world of art, food and wine with three sculpture-filled gardens, six galleries, a vineyard and onsite restaurant which is where we will enjoy todays morning tea.
After being enchanted and inspired by this outstanding experience we are back on road to reconnect with SH1 for a short distance until we take a left on SH12 to Matakohe. We have lunch then visit the award-winning Kauri Museum, which tells the story of our pioneering settlers though the lens of the Kauri Industry.
We will be greeted with a warm welcome and an introduction to the museum which has many exhibits that tell the story of the pioneering days when early European settlers in the area extracted kauri timber and kauri gum.
Continuing north up the west coast we pass through Dargaville into the majestic Waipoua Forest, which preserves some of the best examples of kauri forest remaining in New Zealand. We stop and visit the one and only Tane Mahuta “Lord of the Forrest” which is a giant Kauri tree estimated to be between 1,250 and 2,500 years. It is the largest kauri known to stand today and a truly spiritual experience.
From here it’s a short drive to Omapere to our accommodation for the next two nights, Copthorne Hotel and Resort Hokianga. We will stop for a spectacular photo stop of the Hokianga Harbour then settle into this great location before meeting for dinner and reflecting on a great day of exploring.

Day 3. (Mon 27th) Hokianga
A relaxed start to the morning before boarding the coach and heading up the harbor with the first stop at Opononi. This picturesque place was made famous in the summer of 1955 and 1956 due to the exploits of a dolphin called Opo. We park up next to the statue of Opo for photo opportunities while taking in the magnificent views. Its then onto the village of Rawene, we will experience the historic charm as we have a guided tour of Clendon House, the fascinating home of Captain James Reddy Clendon.
You will then be given free time to wander the village, visit the famous puzzle museum or just enjoy the peaceful way of life. We then meet back for a group lunch before we head back down the harbour.
This afternoon we are collected by Hokianga Express and head out to explore the harbour on a scenic cruise. You will also have the chance to explore the giant sand dunes or try your hand at sand boarding, or you may choose to stay on board and enjoy the views. We arrive back at the accommodation at a leisurely time for you to either visit the Omapere museum or simply enjoy the surroundings.

Day 4. (Tues 28th) Hokianga – Paihia
Board the bus for a great day of exploring as we go West to East enjoying the fantastic scenery along the way. After a quick stop in Kaitaia we head out to the beautiful Karikari Peninsula. We will explore the peninsula getting well off the beaten track as we head out to the magnificent Maitai Bay where we have lunch organized at the northern most winery in NZ, Karikari Estate.
We then journey south to Mangonui which was once a bustling whaling and trading port. The scenic historic village centre is home to some truly exquisite heritage buildings, today housing mainly shops and cafes with local art and crafts. You will have a bit of free time to explore and take in the views of Doubtless Bay.
A short drive around the bay see’s us arrive in Hihi to visit one of the Far North’s most fascinating heritage tourism destinations at Butler Point. We will be treated to a great tour which includes the Whaling Museum, one of the most comprehensive private museums of its kind in New Zealand. Also, Butler House, which is a nationally significant heritage building and the gardens which are recognised as a ‘Garden of Significance’. A great location to enjoy our afternoon tea before we carry on south to the Bay of Islands.
We arrive in Paihia where we will be based for the next few days at the Kingsgate Hotel. After you are settled in, we meet for dinner at the great onsite restaurant and enjoy a lovely meal together getting excited about the coming days adventures!

Day 5. (Wed 29th) Paihia
Today is day 1 of your free time to explore this amazing part of the country. There are many great optional activities available from having a relaxing day in town to traveling along Nighty Mile Beach to the very tip of New Zealand. Please check your optional activity folder for details.
Tonight, we meet back at the hotel at a pre-determined time and have a lovely group dinner together and share stories of our day’s activities.

Day 6. (Thur 30th) Paihia
The second free day to enjoy this special region. Again, check your optional activity folder for the great range of activities available, or there maybe something else you would like to do. The tour leader will help make any bookings you may choose to do.

Day 7. (Fri 31st) Paihia – Waitangi
A relaxed start to the day so we can pack our bags for the short drive to Waitangi. Here we visit the award-winning national attraction, Waitangi Treaty Grounds. This morning we will enjoy an authentic and interactive cultural experience as we have private guided tour of the grounds with free time to explore the Treaty House, museum and view short films. We have a great lunch lined up then will travel the back roads which will see us visit Haruru Falls before arriving in Kawakawa.
We have a great treat lined up for the group as we will take a journey on the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway. This is unique in the world as it is the only working railway where the train travels down the middle of a State Highway and right through the middle of the town. The railway at Kawakawa was the North Island’s first railway to be opened and the first to run a rail passenger service in the North Island. You will also have the chance to visit the world famous Hundertwasser toilets, designed especially by the town’s famous Austrian resident, Freidensreich Hundertwasser.
Back on the coach we have a short drive south to Waiomio and visit the Kawiti Glow worm Caves, Northlands ultimate glow worn experience. Our guided tour will follow a wooden boardwalk through a 200 metre limestone cave system. Once inside, you will see thousands of glow worms spread across the ceiling surrounded by breath taking stalactites and stalagmites.
It is then time to head back to our new spectacular accommodation for the next two nights, The Copthorne Hotel & Resort Waitangi. Your bags will be waiting in your room for you to settle in then we meet to enjoy another lovely group dinner before resting out heads for the night.

Day 8. (Sat 1st Feb) Waitangi
Today is the last chance to experience a Bay of Islands attraction of your choice. Again, check your optional activity folder for the great range of activities.
Tonight, we meet back at the hotel at a 6pm as we have a special group dinner cruise organized. We will enjoy a leisurely 2-½ hour cruise up the Waitangi River to the gorgeous Haruru Falls. Marvel in the tranquil surroundings with a rich abundant of bird life and historical points of interest.
Dine on a scrumptious meal as the sun goes down and experience the unique charter widely promoted as a calm water cruise. Enjoy a relaxed and sociable atmosphere as we share our fantastic stories from the Bay of Islands.

Day 9. (Sun 2nd Feb) Paihia – Waipuna
It is time to leave this piece of paradise as we load up the coach and head south. Our first stop today is to view the majestic 26m high classic curtain Whangarei waterfalls.
After taking in the majestic scenery we head into town to the Town Basin in Whangarei. Here we have the chance to take it the thriving atmosphere and get yourself lunch. You will be given some free time to explore the many shops and galleries, and also view one of the largest and most historically significant collection of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere at Claphams Clock Museum.
Its then back on the coach continuing on the journey into Auckland but we will get off the beaten track and travel via great locations such as Mangawhai, Waiwera and Orewa.
We should arrive at the superb Waipuna Hotel with time to relax before we enjoy another delicious buffet and our final night together.

Day 10. (Mon 3rd Feb) Waipuna – Home
After the final group breakfast, we pack our bags and head south to Papakura to board New Zealand’s longest running passenger service, the Northern Explorer train.
You will enjoy the magnificent scenery through the heart of the North Island on your way to Palmerston North where our coach will be waiting to transfer you back to Wanganui. (BF)

All optional activities must be paid for at the time of your tour deposit to avoid disappointment. You can wait and try to book your activities at a later date, but this is at your own risk of missing out as it is high season in the Bay of Islands. Any other activities such as Golf etc can be pre-organized by the Take It Easy Team.

• For cancellations after the 25th November 2019 – loss of deposit.
• For cancellations one month – seven days prior to travel – 75% of total fare will apply.
