Vietnam:

Riders tour and supporters route - March 22nd - April 2nd 2025

Join us in Central Vietnam riding the Ho Chi Minh Road, Hai Van Pass, Dai Phong and Phong Nha loops. Passing through Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Dong Hoi, Phong Nga and Hanoi this is a tour that has options for  serious riders or those who may want to enjoy a more relaxed option. The Ho Chi Minh Road is fully paved from Saigon in the south to Hanoi in the north. Riding  through a landscape of endless limestone mountains covered in a thick fleece of tropical rainforest and clear blue rivers stretching to the horizon, Central Vietnam's section of the road delivers the ultimate rider and supporter experience.

A quick history of the Ho Chi Minh Road

The Ho Chi Minh road is based on the “Ho Chi Minh Trail” which is a maze of secret trails that are found in Laos. The Vietcong used the Ho Chi Minh Trail to transport goods  South during the Vietnam War.

Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh Road on the other hand, is a well-paved road  that meanders along the Laos Border, purpose-built for travellers on motorcycles with the pretence of history thrown on top. In terms of real history, it does pass through Khe Sanh, where the “Battle of Khe Sanh” took place, known to be the bloodiest battle in the Vietnam War.

There is next to no traffic on the road, and it's not unusual to ride this section all day without passing another soul. Central Vietnam is the narrow region between the Lao Border and the Vietnam Coast, just 70 to 80 kilometres away. This  allows us to run the supporters tour along the coast while the riders  are up on the Ho Chi Minh Road section. The rides are a combination of day loops in Hoi An, Da Nang and Phong Nha, the famous Hai Van Pass to Hue and of course The Ho Chi Minh Road. For the HCMR and Phong Nha legs we will be accompanied by a Vietnamese guide and have as a support vehicle an army style open jeep.

There may be an option to forgo the bike and do the entire tour via jeep but that would be dependent on numbers wishing to take up that option.

The Supporters Tour

A more relaxed off the bike route.

The supporters tour allows for time together, on or off the bike, but with each group taking alternative routes days five and six  before meeting again in the countryside of Central Vietnam for the final leg.  It's also fantastic as a stand alone tour, delivering the best of Central Vietnam:  Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue, Phong Nha and Hanoi so for those taking that  option there is no need to have any bike time at all on the tour, or they may mix it up as their itinerary allows. The supporters tour allows for an extra night in Hue and as its the food capital of Vietnam,  we have included a food tour on your second evening.

For both riders and supporters we have not priced group meals. Wandering the streets and markets as a supporter or being on the road,  and with various tastes and preferences its easier and cheaper to cater for yourself. At the end of this info sheet is an example of meal costs.

Your Tour Guides - Two Expat Kiwis

Ginge - thats me. Ill cover the ride as I've ridden sections of the Western Ho Chi Minh Road on numerous occasions. Most of the places we go to I have checked out, and many of the hosts and connections I know personally and can vouch for.

We have Julie looking after the more relaxed supporters leg. She also brings some experience to those that may be in need of market time, shopping ‘support’ and end of day RnR options.

The only domestic tours we have added in are the Food Tour in Hue for those on the supporters tour and, for everyone, a visit to the must see Paradise Caves in Phong Nha.

There is a range of bikes and I have opted for the mid range Honda XR150. Please keep in mind that the chariot of choice for locals would be a 110cc Honda Blade, transporting a family of four with a fridge on the back – so the 150 will suffice. The bike hire includes damage waiver. There are other bikes available, example HondaCB 500X – price on enquiry. You do not require a motor bike licence for the 150cc bikes, however if you decide to rent a more powerful bike, be aware that any bike over 175cc will require you to have a motor bike licence and an international version of that licence.
